What is CBD and How Does It Work?

CBD has recently caught the wave, and you might have actually seen it in your morning coffee or add-in booster in your post-exercise smoothie. But exactly what is CBD and how does it work? In this read, we are going to cover these two concepts and a comprehensible manner.

CBD stands for Cannabidiol, and it is one of the most prevalent compounds in the cannabis plant. This substance is an essential ingredient of medical marijuana, it’s derived directly from the hemp plant, which belongs to the same family as cannabis.

Is CBD Weed?

The most prevalent compound in cannabis is delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol or THC and happens to be the most active component of the cannabis plant. Marijuana contains both CBD and THC, but they have varying effects. The latter has a mind-altering effect or ‘high’, when consumed, either through smoking or ingestion. That’s because the compound breaks down when heat is applied, thus giving the mind-altering effects.

CBD, unlike THC, isn’t psychoactive, meaning that will not change your state of mind when consumed. However, according to several studies, it has been seen to have substantial effects, most of which are medical benefits.

Where Does CBD Come From?

As mentioned earlier, CBD is derived from the cannabis plant, also known as marijuana. Over the years, people have selectively grown these plants in order to derive high THC levels and other compounds that are of use to them. However, hemp farmers rarely modify the plant, and it has been the prevalent source of CBD.

How Does CBD Work?

All cannabinoids, including this one, produce their effects on the body by interacting with certain receptors. Your body has two receptors for these compounds, known as CB1 and CB2 receptors. These can be found throughout the body, but they are more in the brain. CB1 receptors found in the brain handle emotions, thinking, coordination, movement, memories, thinking, appetite and more. THC attaches to these receptors as well.

CB2 receptors, on the other hand, are more prevalent in the immune system and affect pain and inflammation. According to research, when CBD attaches to these receptors, it can help alleviate pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia and a host of other health conditions.
